Hey all:

It's been eons since I blogged, but I have been busy nurturing a new addiction to Facebook. I have a problem with the quizzes. I can't stop taking them. Amy is way ahead of me and I can't handle it! hee hee

For a quickie update: Spring Break has started (halelujah) and we only have one quarter left of school this year. I got through another term with B's and most of my sanity intact. My job has been crazy busy, but going pretty well. I was evaluated and invited to return next year. ( I think they can't find anyone else who'll do it, so I'm pretty safe.....) Andie has been on her special diet for quite a while, and her symptoms have improved dramatically. We are nearly ready to start adding foods back to her list, so she's happy about that. Darin is doing good. Deer horns are on the ground and the elk are starting to drop, so he's happier than a pig in poo.

That's all I can think of right now. I will try to blog again before summer starts..... :^)

Hey all: We took the family to Disneyland and Knott's for Christmas this year. It was a great time, and we rode rides just like a bunch of kids! I have included our two pics taken on rides for you to enjoy. Darin really is having fun, although his expression doesn't exactly look like that of elation. :)

Christmas Update

Hi All:
We hope you had a wonderful 2008. Things here have been very busy, as usual.

Our hunters did well this year: Andie got her first buck and Darin got his biggest buck. Darin also killed a 5x6 elk that isn’t pictured. I killed a lot of time and got exercise, as usual. We were all very happy with their successes, and I got to brag about them at work.

I finished my Masters Degree and started my first teaching job in the fall. I am very happy with what I’m doing, and I look forward to getting much better at it.

Andie is a freshman this year, and she is doing very well in school. She likes high school much better than junior high. She was the only freshman with a 4.0 in the first quarter. She played volleyball on the JV team and really enjoyed it.

Darin is still managing at Chester’s. He really enjoys the customers and getting to visit with everyone when they come in to shop. If he could figure out how to do that part and get to skip the boring stuff, he would be thrilled! He got to go on a special hunt in November that took 10 points to get. That is where he bagged the buck you see here. That was probably his highlight for the year.

We are grateful to have been blessed beyond belief yet again this year. We hope the true spirit of Christmas fills your hearts and homes this season. Merry Christmas and God bless you all.

At the request of my partner in crime (codename: AJ), I have been thinking about something interesting to blog about.

Well to update yall on ALK's medical stuff, we went to Boise on Dec 5 to see a dietician. This lady was AWESOME, and really took the time to explain how the whole thing works to us. Andie really understands her condition better now. She put Andie on a very strict diet that allows no sugar, no grain, no milk, no raw veggies, and nothing difficult to digest like seeds or whole nuts. She assures us that this is a temporary diet. If Andie stays on track with this for 2-3 months, she may be all healed up and we can start adding foods back in to her diet. Doctor seems to think we can pinpoint the problem foods, avoid them, and all will be well. Andie and I are VERY hopeful that she is right.

Anyhoo, fast forward to now, at Christmas time, when I always make some sweet treat for my little family to enjoy. I have been losing sleep over what I can do for her. I finally found a website with a few recipes that use almond meal instead of flour in them. We made bread the other day, and it was surprisingly good, though the flavor was quite nutty... I am doing an orange cake today. I will let you know how it comes out. It better be good, the almond meal is $10.69 a POUND here. It's lucky we even have it here, and we wouldn't if D didn't run the grocery dept in the store. He's been great about finding us the obscure ingredients we need for these recipes.

So our life in December has been this: Go to grocery store. Read labels. Argue with child about if food is allowed or not. Buy or don't buy. Ask for payment plan. Plan ahead for taking lunches to school. Cook hot breakfast at 6 am. Nag child to write in food journal. Ask child if she is better yet. Try to make the best of it. Worry. Pray. Pray some more. :)

So that will do it for an update on Andie. Sorry its been so long. Life is so busy sometimes. Blogging is more fun, I should do it more.

You've got to love our older Veterans. This man, 73, wears a protective flap over his ear while Senator Ted Kennedy, Barack O'Bama, and Hilary Clinton address the Veterans of Foreign Wars. I wish I could shake this man's hand. I just want to know where he got it.... I Love it.

Second Day of Season

This post is for all the girls and Josh. I saw him in the grocery store on Friday, and told him that I would post pics on the blog if we got anything. It was a bit strange to run into him in my town. The second morning of hunting season, my hubby shot this 5x6 bull around 7am.
The thing left us a great blood trail and we found it within 30 minutes of looking. We then spent the next 30 minutes cutting all the dead junk out from around it so we could start taking care of it.
After much slipping, sliding and trying to injure ourselves, we walked back (a long way) and got the packboards. The meat packing was interesting.... Straight uphill, about 100 yards and over a hill to the road. (Three trips each, and D packed the heavier stuff.)
These pictures don't really show how steep the terrain was. When we needed to rest (often), we just reached out in front and touched the ground. It was a great workout.....
Anyway, D made an amazing shot that was perfect, all while the elk was watching him... It was 60 yards, but he held for 40 because of the steep slope. He shot through a hole in the brush, too. (Freakin' trick shot...) I am impressed, to say the least. I hope to get something else to blog about as soon as I recover from this adventure. :)

Disclaimer: Please do not expect trick shooting from me. While I am not opposed to trick shooting, I am unable to perform these feats the way my skilled and handsome husband does. :)

Personal Victory

I have been working out all summer when I could get to the weight room, and my goal is to be able to do 5 pull ups by the time school starts. Today I was able to do 3! That is my best so far, and I was very excited about it! Last week, I still couldn't do one. I love it when hard work FINALLY pays off..... :)

Took Andie to the doc on Friday. We went to a new doc who happens to be a woman. Funny how Andie is more comfortable talking about her bowels and related happenings with a woman rather than a man. :) Anyhoo, she is on a very restricted diet for right now until we get all her ducks back in a row. After we get her healed up again she will probably be able to get away with more things in her diet. (We are hoping so, anyway....) She is adjusting to the idea of her new food choices. Tough when you're 14, but it's lucky she is such a trooper.

Also, I have some pics of the family reunion for your viewing pleasure. It was great to see everyone again!!

I have been thinking for some time that I should put a new post on the blog, but I had nothing really to blog about. Thanks Becky, for inspiring me. After thinking about the nothing I have to post about, I discovered that I actually do have a few things to talk about.

I went to school for three weeks, only being home on the weekends. After that I was home for three days before I left to go to the Wilson-McCumber reunion, which kept me away from home for another three days and two nights. My husband is thrilled with the possibility that I may stay home and cook or do laundry for more than a couple of days in a row. I am thrilled, as well. SO glad to be home. Turns out I really like it here.....

In two weeks I am taking Andie to a naturopath who specializes in nutrition. We have very high hopes that she will be able to get her on a good eating plan that will keep her UC in remission. As for now, she is doing alright. The symptoms come and go, and we are trying to discover which foods help and which ones hurt. It's quite a process, but she's been a trooper. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

It was great to see you other McCumbers at the reunion. We really need to see each other more often. Too much time goes by between our opportunities to get together. Thanks for coming out and hanging with us! (You too, Jan, even though I am still being called Benedict Arnold....)

College Kid

For those of you who don't know, I am in LG for three weeks this summer. I am renting a house, and living alone. Gotta tell ya, I was kinda scared about moving into this neighborhood. The first week wasn't great. A lot of things to get used to. This week, things are looking up. I could really enjoy just being responsible for myself, if it wasn't for the homework.... I also think it's good for ALK and D to fend for themselves a bit. They truly don't starve to death or run out of clothes to wear when I am gone. They suddenly become more capable of taking care of themselves when I am gone. I need to figure out how to make them stay like this even after school is over. :) The words "never gonna happen" come to mind..........

Update on ALK

We took Andie to the doc today for her first appointment since the colonoscopy. She does indeed have Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Ulcerative Colitis, to be specific), but it is now in remission. What we have to do now is make sure to keep it in remission. The main dietary precaution the doctor recommended was to cut out as much refined sugar as possible. My little sweet tooth girl did not take this very well, but she will adjust.... Dr. has her on anti inflammatory pills and a probiotic, as well as her iron and aloe vera juice. She will maintain this regimen for three months and we will return to dr. to see if she is all fixed. I am just happy to know what the heck was wrong! She was quite sick, and I think preventing another flare up will become numero uno priority around here!! Thanks for all your prayers and concern. We appreciate it!!

Whirlwind...

My last day of work at school was Friday. YEE HAW!!! Graduation was Saturday. Sam is in uniform, 'cause she is a faculty member, so she gets to go every year. Graduation was much more fun than college!! I would go every year if they let me!!! Sunday was our anniversary, so we took off from graduation and went on our annual road trip. We drove to McCall for the first night, Stanley for the second night, and Boise for the third. This picture is of us with the Sawtooth Mountains in the background. They are VERY impressive, the pics don't do them justice.
Here is D's new girlfriend he met in Idaho City. Isn't she stacked? In this photo he is making smalltalk and trying to break the ice. She doesn't seem too interested! :)
I'm not sure what he said, but she seems to be warming up to him in this shot..... He's a smooth talker, that husband of mine! :)
That's what we've been up to. I have two days at home to catch up, then doctor appointments in Hermiston on Friday. We should find out more about Andie's issues then. Monday I start school in LG again for three weeks. It's going to be Fall again before I know what happened. TTFN

8th Grade Trip

Here are some pics of the 8th grade trip we went on. We took the kids to Silverwood Theme Park near Sandpoint, ID. They had a ball, and were very well behaved. Sorry it's been so long since an entry. Been very busy trying to situate summer classes, graduation, and next year's job. School's out in a week, so I should have more time..... I hope.

Too Hot for Horn Hunting!!!

We went out today and walked many miles. The temp was near 100, so the creeks got way full with the snow melt. These overfull creeks caused us some logistical problems. I had to get the truck to go get Darin. This is after I had to drive the 4 wheeler through the creek at another spot to get to the truck. He would have waded, but I told him I would rescue him!!

Scary, but fun!!

Darin found these, and I was showing him how tough I am. We found quite a few, but I developed a mild case of heat exhaustion, which slowed us down for a while. After I cooled off in the creek and got some cold water down me, things improved dramatically.

Why I Love My Mom

She taught us to laugh and not take ourselves too seriously...

She's a fabulous cook...

She can make ANYTHING crafty or in the wood shop....

She taught us that power tools aren't just for boys... :)

She has a spit-fire spirit, and instilled that in her children...

She stands up for what she believes in...

She REFUSES to be intimidated by anyone or anything... (I like that alot...)

Her love for her kids and grandkids is very apparent in all her actions.

She pours her heart and soul into her family, and taught us kids to do the same...

This is just a sampling of the reasons I love my mom. I had better like her, too, since I am in the process of turning into her...... :)

Things I Love About My Home Town

Basketball games: The whole town turned out to watch basketball games. It was so fun, and EVERYBODY was there.
Bon Fires in the woods: Frequently the teenagers would go to the hills and build big fires, where we would proceed to stand around and drink beer. There were always great stories the next day..... some true, some not so much.
Safety: We felt safe to walk wherever we wanted. We knew everyone, so we knew who the wierdos were, and we avoided them.
Rednecks: I love the redneck attitude. Most people from home are God fearing people who have a very strong sense of right and wrong. They really try not to overcomplicate things. (of course I am totally generalizing, here....)
Rivalry in sports among local schools: Some of the most thrilling times in my growing up live involved intense sports contests between us and our rival schools. Those times were awesome.
District and State tournaments in Baker: Our district tournaments were always in Baker, and we had a blast there! I don't even remember if we won, but being there is a great memory.
The Booster Club: We helped with many fundraisers over the years, from serving pie and coffee after basketball games to helping with a pit barbecue to concessions. Mom and Dad were really involved, so we ended up helping, too.
Lip Syncs: We did these for school fundraisers about twice a year. They were a hoot!
Going to Town: When we got old enough to drive, going to John Day to run around was one of the best things to do. We would cruise by baseball practice and pick out our favorite player to drool over. Then we'd go get a pop, drive around some more, and go home.
Family atmosphere: If we had any problems, we could find about any adult from MV, and they were always willing to help out. On the same token, they were willing to call our parents if we were seen doing things we had no business. Didn't like it so much then, but as a parent it seems like a great feature.

Hello all !

So sorry for my absence. I have thought of many many things to blog about, but I cannot find time to blog while I am coherent enough to think of those things. Heres a quickie rundown on whats been happening with me.

1. Andie's health issues: I am currently in a motel room in Boise, where we are spending the night awaiting her colonoscopy in the morning. She has finished her bowel prep, which she DID NOT enjoy. She pooped and pooped and pooped and so on until she finally fell asleep. We check in to the hospital at 6:30 am for her colonoscopy at 8. Since my last blog on the subject, I have spent much quality time on the phone with receptionists at three different doctor's offices trying to coordinate test results, insurance coverage, and scheduling. I am on a first name basis with my three new friends.... :) We should have definitive results within the next week and then we will know what to do from here. I also got a name for a great nutritionist over here who has helped a friend of mine with similar issues.

2. Applying for Graduate programs, jobs and graduation: I have been buried in paperwork again, compiling my applications for my special ed program, and for jobs. I have also been trying to get ready for graduation. Sam will have to help me with the dang robe and hood. There was no class on how to work the stinking hood!! BTW: Found out today that I did get a job. I am now gainfully employed again!! I am happy to know what I will be doing next school year. The great part is that I get to spend half a day at the high school every day, and it's Andie's freshman year. I am much more excited about this portion than she is. I wonder if she thinks I will embarrass her in front of her friends..? (not me...)

3. We got a new roof put on our house and I planted a couple of trees and a yucca. The insurance crap associated with that was mostly taken on by my darling husband, but it was disruptive nonetheless. D and I did the cleanup ourselves, to save the many $ per hour that the contractor would have charged us.

4.The last time D went out horn hunting, the STUPID dog got skunked. He had never seen a skunk, so he didn't know any better. He had it all down his front, and we have been working on him frequently to try to improve his fragrance. I bought some stuff at D&B on my way to #5 and we have sprayed it on him a couple of times. I think he's getting better, but I am not sure. Maybe I am just getting used to the smell....

5. Tristan's birthday party was on Saturday. Andie and I went over and celebratedwith him. It was a ball, and he is so cute.

6. Andie has been on band trips, and track meets about every time i turn around. I don't know how you guys with multiple kids function.

Anyway, this is my life for the past couple of weeks. I will try to be better about not bottling up my blogthoughts and just blurting them out all at once. I will try to express my blogthoughts when I am feeling them and return to my healthy blogger mentality.

Saturday's weather was ugly. It snowed and the wind howled for the majority of the time we were hiking. We found 13 horns, and D did a great slide move down a big snow drift. He said he slid about 30 feet and didn't stop until he ran out of snow. I was on the other side of the ridge, so I didn't get to see. I was bummed to miss it. :) Anyhoo, not a bad day overall, but my butt stayed cold for a long time until I soaked in a hot tub to warm it up..... (And to think I do this for fun...?)

This is what my darling husband was doing while I worked today. He had a GREAT day horn hunting, found a ton, and the weather was fabulous. Tomorrow I have the day off and I get to go, but the forecast calls for snow! I am not happy, but he made me smile for pictures when he got home. His pack weighed about 70 lbs, and I am glad it was him who had to walk to the truck carrying it. :) Anyway, not a bad day's work!

Orange Spice Tea: It's still good if you forget about it and let it get cold. In teaching, it has become important to bring a drink to work that I will still like when I acutally get time to enjoy it.

Sorry I didn't explain myself. We do this in the spring and sell most of them to support D's archery habit. :) It is good exercise, sometimes too good, and we have fun doing it. We put in a couple of 12 mile days last year, but we haven't done more than probably 6 miles so far this year. Here's a pic of me on a very good day last year, and D rearranging them so they could fit in the living room. Your comment cracked us up. I wanted to find a whole bunch of trumpets and trombones to take pics of and tell you we found them..... hee hee

We walked to the top of the world for this picture under a ginormous snowdrift.
The only brown horn we found was this one. I found nothing but tracks. We walked many many miles, and my feet are sore!!!

Darin was horn hunting when he walked within 20 feet of these guys. Mom was not at all happy to see him, but she calmed down when her and baby were safe in the tree. D said it was a bit closer than he liked, and our STUPID dog didn't even know there was a bear in the area. A lot of help he is, huh?

Officer, this is how the fight started...I rear-ended the car in front of me. I admit that. It was my fault.So, we both pull over to the side of the road, and slowly the driver of the car I hit gets out of his car. . . and you know how you just-get-sooo-stressed... and life... sometimes life seems like... suddenly funny? Well, the driver of the car I hit is a DWARF! He gets out of his car and I get out of my car.He is frowning and scowling and he storms over to me. Right up close at me he looks up in my face and says, "I AM NOT HAPPY!"And I don't know what possessed me, officer, but I look down at him and I said, "Well, if you're not Happy -- which one are you?".. . . and that's when the fight started.

We used to go around the coffee table at mom and dad's to the rhythm of that song. It starts out slow, so we would go slowly around until the song got faster and faster, and eventually we were running like maniacs around the coffee table until the song got over and we all fell on the ground laughing. I don't know how our parents stood it, or how we all escaped head injuries from falling on the coffee table. You must have been pretty little, or you would remember it. We did it ALOT, and it was obnoxious!

PS: I am skipping out on top ten Tuesday this week, because I would skin my husband alive if he did the male equivalent. :)

Spring Break is Over Already... What happened?

Where did the time go? We went shed hunting and found a few, then to a Blazer Game, then Andie and I went to Hermiston to see her doctor. It snowed a lot while we were gone and we had an interesting trip home that evening. During the trip we had a great time, except for at the doctor's. He didn't have great news for us.

She may have Inflammatory Bowel Disease, so we have MORE tests to do. A pediatric colonoscopy is her next great adventure, after numerous poo, blood, and saliva tests. I cannot begin to explain how gross it is to harvest fecal samples at home. Amy, you are really missing out.... :) She loves it as much as me, and we have done some real bonding over the course of several poo samples.

It is also possible that she may have celiac disease instead of IBD, in which case, we simply remove all gluten from her diet. I understand this is much easier said than done, however.

Anyhoo, she could use any prayers you have to spare at this time.

All in all, she's taking it well, and with a great sense of humor. She's a great kid, and I hope we get this resolved soon.

We had a great laugh about the colonoscopy:

ALK: I'm not crazy about them sticking a camera up my butt!

Me: Hey! Maybe they'll find that lost library book.....

ALK: You are horrible..... (laughing)

Me: Well, we've looked everywhere else.
